Students can practice data reading and graphing skills by finding current data at the Bureau of Economic Analysis, U.S. Department of Commerce. National Council on Economic Education materials at EconEdLink provide worksheets for using current GDP data.

For international data students can consult the CIA Factbook. For historical data, see the International Monetary Fund World Economic Outlook Database.

The nonprofit group Redefining Progress has measured a Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI) to correct GDP accounts for a number mismeasurement problems.

For comparisons between countries that go beyond GDP per capita, see the United Nations Development Programme’s Human Development Index. Students can use the HDI to compare countries and then find other sources to explain the divergence between the HDI and GDP per capita.

A group of researchers at Yale University has created an Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI) that compares countries on the basis of their performance on various measures including air and water quality, biodiversity, and greenhouse gas emissions.
